Having set aside the date during our last outing, I was completely surprised to learn that we were again heading into new territory. Lisa was driving and we 91ed north to Greenfield, MA and Four Phantoms Brewing Co. We arrived a little after 3 p.m. and parked within a few feet of the front entrance. After a warm greeting by the tap-tender we explained our mission and discovered that we were the only patrons.

Drew Phillips opened the doors of Four Phantoms in Greenfield, Massachusetts in 2021. He began his fermentation career in the Pacific Northwest, and while waiting to open his own brewery, he took on the role as cider maker at Artifact Cider Project. Known for his creative ciders and beers, Drew blends tradition with innovation, sourcing local fruit and experimenting with wild fermentation.
Drew is no stranger to fermenting having spent time brewing first in Oregon and then cider at Artifact Cider Project in Florence, Massachusetts before opening Four Phantoms over a year ago. He has an interest in old recipes and pushing the envelope with special ferments and Old Gods is a great representation of what can be done, when done well.

We got right down to business and ordered our first round after perusing the menu and having our questions answered. Kelley, up first, ordered Wizard Fight - a hazy session ale; I ordered a pint of Hop Hop & Away - a hazy session IPA; and Lisa ordered a Late Harvest cider.

We learned that Four Phantoms has been operational at the present location for going on four years. The site had previously housed another brewery. The location is in a mixed-use area that is primarily residential. The building's structure led us to believe that it originated as a manufacturing site and given the architecture, probably dated to the Civil War era. The interior contained massive wooden beams and cross members.

Told to make ourselves at home, we left the tap room and selected a table in the vat room which contained an assortment of tables, chairs, and benches as well as a slew of brewing equipment and a small free-standing stove which helped take the chill away. We were also looking to distance ourselves from the music playing in the tap room as we had several weeks' worth of activities to review and discuss.

I discovered while reviewing some on-line information that Hop Hop & Away is a brew created by Aeronaut Brewing of Somerville, MA. I have to say that it is perhaps the best IPA that I've ever tasted and happily ordered another pint for my second. Kelley decided to switch to this one for her second as well. Lisa enjoyed her cider but chose a glass of water to round out her refreshment sample.

Forgot to take photos but we ordered two servings of chips and dip and we each had a large slice to pizza while enjoying our afternoon and refreshments. We stayed about 1 1/2 hours and were the only customers the whole time. That is not a reflection on the appeal of the brew pub. As we were preparing to leave, a customer arrived for the 5 p.m. activity. We noticed on the calendar of activities that there are near daily evening events. However, we enjoyed the lack of TVs and other distractions. We would not hesitate to return.
